JBJ’s Longguo Debuts Solo with “Clover”
The first former member of JBJ has made his debut! Jin Longguo, former vocalist of JBJ and Produce 101 contestant, released digital single “Clover” as a thank you gift to Joyfuls, marking the first solo debut from the group since their disbandment.
Seeing as it’s the first solo debut from JBJ, it was difficult to predict what we could expect from Longguo. One thing that certainly wasn’t expected, though it was a welcomed treat, was the featuring of legendary female rapper Yoon Mirae, who appears for more than one featured verse in the song. In fact, her first verse is in English, with the second being a mix of Korean and English.
The track itself is very warm, sweet, and groovy. The musiciality obviously takes inspiration from R&B influences with some pop, and while it can sound somewhat generic upon first listen, it very quickly grows on you. The sweetness of the track comes in with the lyrics. Longguo revealed that the release of this digital single was especially for fans, so it’s no surprise he expresses lovely sentiments that will make any fan feel warm and fuzzy inside.
The aesthetic in the videography is also extremely pleasing, with a focus on neon colors that shine behind a darkened Longguo, a stark contrast from the usual single spotlight placed on the singer. All colors of the rainbow are used in gradients on the background, and the excessive use of these colors adds to the overall warm feeling of the track. As expected, the notorious “Cat Dad” sneaks in a bit with one of his famous kitties, as well as a throwback to JBJ’s final release with the simple phrase “always call me” printed on a white background before flashing back to his face.
Overall, “Clover” is a solid release from the soloist. Many of us that were big fans of JBJ are looking forward to the solo activities from each of the members, and Longguo’s debut is a nice kick off to what we can expect from them all in the future. Joyfuls, get ready to have your heart warmed once again by one of the boys we love so much!
