Band of the Week: Day6
We’re back again with another band of the week! This week is all about DAY6! Originally known as 5LIVE, they debuted with an original soundtrack titled “Lovely Girl” for the drama Bel Ami. Later in 2015, drummer Dowoon was added to the group, forming what we now know as Day6. However, in 2016 their keyboardist Junhyeok left the band and JYP Entertainment for his own personal reasons. The remaining members are Sungjin, leader/main vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Jae, main guitarist and vocalist, Young K, bassist and vocalist, Wonpil, keyboardist/synthesizer and vocalist, and Dowoon, their drummer.
Early this summer they released their third mini-album Shoot Me: Youth Part 1. Their title song “Shoot Me” has been climbing the charts since. Known for their soft rock and overall chill vibe, “Shoot Me” expresses their growth toward a more hard rock sound while maintaining a pop-rock harmony. The song focuses on how harsh words can be like bullets, making the victim of such verbal abuse feel as if they have been shot. Many fans believe the song refers to bullying or how in a relationship verbal abuse can go both ways. Either way, Day6 clearly wants a more conscious concern for how people treat one another, advocating for a more kind, respectful society.
Along with the added success of their new album, Day6 is also planning their first world tour with North American ticket sales starting September 15. They will kick off their North American tour in Toronto and then head to Minneapolis, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and, lastly, Los Angeles. The tour will take place in October of this year and is said to have sold out shows during their stops in Asia and Australia. They’ll be in Taipei and Bangkok early in September, and before heading to North America, they’ll have a show in Manila. One last show in Jakarta in early December will lead up to the start of the group’s European shows in January of 2019.
DAY6 has been bridging the K-Pop and K-Rock genres, granting fans a new, fresh perspective on pop rock. Their global success has been fuel to fire up audiences around the world in preparation for their tour. JYP’s first band is sure to make more waves on the charts as they continue to rock music shows, so be sure to brush up on all Day6 songs by buying their new album before the start of their tour.
