Jellyfish Entertainment’s New Group VERIVERY Brings a Colorful Debut
It’s been a very long time since Jellyfish Entertainment debuted a boy group. So long, in fact, that VIXX was the last one back in 2012. A lot of anticipation surrounded VERIVERY’s official debut, since the group began garnering attention with their pre-debut reality show. Following up a group like VIXX comes with a lot of pressure and expectations, as well as questions into which artistic direction this group will go.
“Ring Ring Ring”
Put simply, the debut track “Ring Ring Ring” is absolutely delightful if you’re looking for some musical reminiscence. The melody has distinct ‘90s pop vibes from the moment the track begins—think Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston. The melody is so classically ‘90s that you’ll feel an immediate wave of nostalgia at the familiar synth rhythm. The high energy music is almost infectious, and definitely fits the young boys well. This choice in music certainly leaves a mark, especially on older fans who grew up with this type of music.
This direction is unexpected for a debut these days, where groups often go for the most intense and complex concepts to gain attention. This concept is so focused on the ‘90s that it even contains the signature bright colors and shapes of the era, with each member wearing a different vivid color on the spectrum. The cuteness the members exude definitely fits the bright and upbeat melody and visual elements in a way that is totally endearing and not overbearing. As opposed to a group that is very clearly going overboard with the cuteness, it’s more like an addition to the overall concept than a concept in and of itself.
Debut mini-album VERI-US features five tracks, beginning with “Ring Ring Ring.” “Flower” kicks off the B-sides with a more modern rhythm compared to the title, but still just as bubbly and enjoyable. It is a refreshing, warm track in the midst of the cold, harsh winter. Next comes “F.I.L,” an acoustic track that sticks out for not having the usual complex backing melody at the beginning of the track, and instead having the listener focus on the vocals of the members. “Alright” brings back the retro vibes with cheerful jazz vibes, matching the energy of the title and getting you up on your feet at once. It’s a super fun and energetic track that will get you addicted immediately. The album concludes with an acoustic version of their pre-debut song “Super Special,” giving a more intimate feel to the originally dynamic track that is incredibly soothing and a lovely conclusion to the album.
All and all, this debut from VERIVERY is definitely a strong one. The choice of a retro concept helps to make this release stand out and carve a spot for the group in our hearts. We look forward to what VERIVERY has in store in the future!
